I couldn't help but to continue to consider Walsh' words yesterday regarding the church. Like many organizations and businesses, churches struggle as well, with retaining people with in the church. Retention and attrition, for that matter.
A church can be so focused on outreach, that they spend little to no time on building and maturing the faith of those who have been apart of the church for any significant length of time. A church can be so focused on a particular age group, demographic or need within the community, that others will question why they continue (not just that, church is about 'what's in it for me', but if one feels disconnected or they feel they don't belong after numerous attempts to get "plugged-in") to attend where they feel left out. A church can be so focused on a topic or an emphasis of ministry, that while it may be great that that is what they are known for and do well, if they don't develop or grow other areas of ministry for people to be involved, then they too, may not stay around. The church is full of great people, great opportunities and great ideas. And while a church may not be able to accomplish all that it hopes, dreams and sets out to do, if a church can't find a consistent rythem of sustained development and growth, in terms of both physical numbers and spiritual maturity, then everything they set out to do in ministry will be some sort of uphill battle. Finances, participation, efficiency and effectiveness... all of it will be a struggle, sooner or later. So, pray this #effectiveSunday, that God would strength the body of Christ, in their current state. May those who are a part be encouraged, to develop their faith, to contribute to the ministry, to deepen their relationship. Pray that conflict and problems would not be so disruptive as to cause splits, and departure; but that people would work through differences and come out of situations and circustance stronger than when they began. May the faith of many remain steadfast and firm to that which they profess; unwavering and uncomprising. Pray God would accomplish the miraculous in honor of their faithfulness to the work of God and the advancement of the gospel of Christ. Rythem and balance. Strong foundations and great development. The building UP of the body of Christ To impact the world, both locally and globally. For the glory of God. - PNC

A number of weeks ago, I was loading YouTube on the flat screen (I forgot what I was going to watch), but before the clip started, an ad started playing. It turns out, it was the promotional video for the Church of Scientology. Something inside of me said, watch this (rather than taking advantage of the "skip ad" button). For the next 8 or 10 minutes, I sat, as they talked about what they are accomplishing in spreading the message of their religion.
On the surface, it's hard to deny, it's impressive. The organizational set-up, the distribution of materials, the building programs, the community of people... of course, there is no mention anywhere of the person of Jesus Christ; so to watch the level of their effectiveness and efficient for something other than the Gospel of Christ was disconcerting at the very least. Now, of the past couple of weeks, A&E has aired Leah Remini's documentary on what really happens behind the facade. I finally got to watch the first two episodes, back to back, as they played them again. (The third one airs the night of 12/13). The stories and the lives that have been affected are utterly incredible. Families torn apart and lives utterly destroyed from the tactics of those who rise up against them. I simply couldn't fathom... to acheive such a level of effectiveness that ultimately destroys people, while professing to make them better and save the planet. Meanwhile, the church of Jesus Christ, faces many battles. Really, too numerous to start listing them. Ultimately, though, it's God who works in the hearts and lives of people as He reveals Himself and makes Himself known. It's not an organization who uses people to spread the message of man, but the Spirit of God who compels us to share the message of saving grace of Jesus Christ. We do not seek to ruin those who don't come to the place of confessing Christ is Lord and Savior, but pray God's will be accomplished in their lives as He desires that none should end find themselves in eternity without the presence of Jesus Christ. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, that God's anointing would rest upon the church; that He would go before us and prepare hearts to hear the message of Christ. May we not rest on the laurels of what we have achieved, but on what God by His sovereign Hand has worked and moved on our behalf as we pray His will be accomplished here on Earth. Though tempting, may we not compare our efforts and accomplishments to what other churches and religions may achieve, but focus on God; that we may be found faithful and obedient to the purpose and plans He has called us to not in pursuit of one man's thinking, but God's divine desire to commune with His Creation... an opportunity made available, because He loved the World enough to send Christ as payment for our sins. Faithful to the cause of Jesus Christ For it is the power of salvation, That we have relationship with Almighty God Not because of who we are, But who He is. For His glory and honor, we pray. - PNC ![]() We can desire to do many things, but sometimes our energy level does not rise to occassion. It's not a lack of motivation... we truly to do want to accomplish what is set before us or complete what awaits us. It's that our energy level from within, whether physcially, emotionally, mentally or spiritually, is saying, "Yeah... no. Not yet. Not right now." After some time, whether the energy level is ready or not, you may find yourself in a position where you no longer have a choice. Time for delay no longer exists, and thus you are either scrambling as the time runs out or your frustration with the matter becomes the primary motivator that you just want to get it done and off your mind. Whatever the situation, there is so much to accomplish; so much that each of us are able to accomplish. People set examples for us, daily, and many watch in wonder as to how they do it. They are effective in their method. They are efficient in their process. The results speak volumes. And many watch impressed, not realizing the potential lies with all of us to do and accomplish impressive things ourselves at which others would be amazed. It's just having the energy that rises to meet the motivation that results in action. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, that God would give rest to the weary and down-trodden. May He strengthen and quicken those who remain focused on Him; trusting that He will provide all they have need of when when they feel they are running low. Pray God would accomplish the miraculous as people set out to accomplish what awaits them. May their be a grace and a covering, as people work through places of difficulty; that actions, attitudes and words would not ruin or detract from the task at hand, even when problems arise and frustrations interfer. God, prepare the way, Make our paths known. To see the plans you have laid, Enegy and motivation to fulfill our calling. For Your glory. - PNC ![]() A thought occurred to me yesterday afternoon, as our family worked on putting up the Christmas tree... and kids attempting to help. Participation awards don't mean that you are an effective contributor to the event. It is simply somewhere along the medium between showing up and another mark in the loss column. It certainly doesn't not guarantee, nor help ensure a point towards a win; let alone a mention in the record books. This is the difference that sets teams, organizations, families, communities and churches apart. The difference between a people who are more than conquerors and less than winners. Everyone is on the same page moving with the same purpose. They are there to the end. They are there for the win. They offer everything in support of the goal. They work with the end in mind, while understanding the importance of offering their best for that specific moment, because they know that anything less, takes away from the process rather than enhances it. Sadly, the lack of this mindset has cost the church greatly over the years. And the church knows it. Their community knows it. Society knows it. It's time we change it. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, God would help the church; that our eyes would be open to where we are lax; where we are missing opportunities and where resources and people are not appropriately placed and positions for success. May God grant wisdom to church leaders and coordinators, to be wise stewards of who and what are under their purview, to discern what is available and what is required for the church to be more effective and efficient in communicating the gospel of Jesus Christ. While the methods may change, May the message remain. God is Love. Jesus Saves. Man forever changed. - PNC "The Church loses everything, when it loses the spirit of prayer." - Pastor Jim Cymbala
Seriously. We aren't known as a house of compassion, healing, restoration, teaching or fellowship. Not for great worship, great preaching, great friends and great ministry. It is Christ, who declared his house to be known as a house of prayer. Thus, if we lose the spirit, the desire, the wherewithal... the urgency of being people of prayer, what is left that would cause people to seek out the church? What value to we offer a society and a culture in desperate need of God if we do not experience relationship with Him through the avenue of prayer? Pastor Cymbala says it like this: "When you pray, God comes. When you don't, He doesn't." Thus, pray #effectiveSunday, that the church would indeed be people of prayer. May we hold fast to the spirit and desire to seek the face of God and witness His presence in our midst. Pray the sense of urgency never gets set aside or shuffled in favor of other things; grand and necessary as they may be. While service on Sunday may witness great attendance, pray an increase in those who gather for prayer. As my pastor always says, the church moves forward on its' knees. May we know God, And seek His face; To know His will And experience His power. Through prayer. - PNC ![]() So, yesterday my oldest attended a birthday party at the theatre in town and she had a great time. The youngest didn't want to go, so my wife ended up at the movie and the youngest and I got lost. We went for a little drive and ended up at a store, that I'm trying to recall if I've been in before. Perhaps once, a number of years ago. It didn't take long for me to remember, what I've written about a couple of times here. "At a certain pace, it's hard to be both effective and fast." Just as I typed that, I remember the day, Dad told me I could no longer use the riding mower to mow the grass as my childhood home. That old Cub Cadet mower was a fun beast, except for that afternoon that Dad asked what gear I was traveling in, that made it look like it was not cutting as well as it should. To which I replied, "third". Third was top gear. That's how it was yesterday. I knew where my daughter was in the store and she wasn't going round so far that she was out of sight or anything, but always a few feet further along than I was. Dad, come here. Dad, check this out. Dad, look at this! Yes, I'm getting there. Yes, I see it, Yeah, that's cool... hang on a second! Likewise in ministry... Churches can grow too fast in numbers... Churches can take on too many projects, events or ministry opportunities... Churches can implement too many elements into a ministry before they are necessary.... And much like individuals often do, churches can simply move in ways, directions and speeds that we find our ourselves stepping out and away from where God would have us to be, go, do and move... in places where He is not ready for us to stand. And much like my youngest... God look over here! Yes, but I'm not ready for you to be over there. I am not with you over there. I am here. We're doing this now. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, that the church would recognize, hear, understand and respond to the voice of God. May we find ourselves where He would have to be and be used where He has placed us. Pray for wisdom and guidance to stay the course and has destined for us; that we may not move away from His Spirit; that we would not detour from the plans and purposes He has in store that we should accomplish. Pray the church remain focused on the ministries God has called us to and not distracted by all the other opportunities, that while legitimate, may not be where God would desire, whether just for a time and season or ever. Pray for discernment, that leaders would have the mind of Christ as they lead the people of God to make an impact in our culture for the cause of Jesus Christ. Efficient in pace. Effective in ministry. Balance in the journey For the glory of God. - PNC ![]() Yesterday while out with the family, my mix tape that contains White Heart's album Powerhouse was playing. There's a prayer post somewhere in the last 500+ days that I've written titled, Lovers & Dreamers, inspired by White Heart's song by the same name. What struck me, though was the question posed before the chorus of the song kicks in. "But how wise is a wise-man, if all he ever does is sit in his chair?" The lyrics proceed by stating that you have the option of taking your seat in the stands, but in the next verse, pleads that one wouldn't choose that option. As pastor has stated many times, it's great to come to church, and receive the message and worship together; to learn and grow through ministry and to watch your kids learn the things of God... all such things are great. But eventually, part of being "a part of the chair" means being involved. Not only in receiving ministry, but in contributing to ministry. If being effective and efficient continually and constantly relies on the same people... It figures, I'm writing this as the final touches are taking place in our family for church, and kids keeping asking for the same, one person in asking for help to finish getting ready. The same occurs in church... the same people constantly being asked, occassionally wondering... "is there nobody else who can do what you are asking me to do?" Pray, this #effectiveSunday, for those in ministry, whether leading or helping, who are frustrated and tired by "always" being the one(s) to do the work. Pray they would be strengthened and encouraged by God, even this hour. Pray that there would those who would come forward, to offer some much needed help and reprieve for those who've faithfully served. May God accomplish the miraculous this day, as the Word of God goes forth... as we have prayed this week, may hearts received; minds understand; the body healed and relationships restored. May there be an increase in the harvest of the kingdom of God Because of an influx in the number of God's harvesters. For the glory of God And the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC ![]() Well, I'm on cloud #9 this morning! Actually, since yesterday afternoon. I've been writing on a borrowed mini-laptop for the past number of weeks, and, today when I finally had a few minutes to catch up on how readership and website traffic went this past month, the numbers were down. A combination of feeling limited on being able to publish the website as I'm accustomed to and getting the word out, through social media. Of course, my schedule of late hasn't helped much either. That said... the part to fix my laptop arrived in the mail and Dad was gracious enough to let me interrupt his afternoon, in getting the new fan installed. On the upside, I got to see the end of our state's college rivals football game, which our families' preferred team won! Plus, I brought the grandkids with me, which always puts a smile on their faces. Upon getting back home, I can't believe how much easier this machine is running! One simple, part... brand-new, factory replacement. $20, thanks to free shipping on eBay. How appropriate then, to be reflecting on the increased effectiveness and efficiency on the eve of the day we pray over those elements for the church. Originally, it was suggested perhaps my machine had picked up a virus or some such, potentially disastrous mess. Thankfully, it was "just" this. Consider, though, some areas in your church, where a simple fix changes the performance of the work and mission of the local body of Christ in your community. So often, we think it might cost big money to pull off an event or conduct an outreach or get out the message, when in reality, that may not be the case. It may take a second opinion or a 3rd set of eyes to look into things, but it very well could make the difference. Estimates are just that... creatives solutions are available for those willing to look for them. Of course, it's comforting to know that if it's important to us, then it's important to God. For what Father looks at his kid struggling and frustrated and says, "Sorry, what you're going through doesn't bother or concern me. You're on your own." Pray with me, this #effectiveSunday, that first and foremost, people in and outside the church would be reminded that God cares for every struggle, frustration and difficulty that we endure. Whether through the fault of someone else, our own or for the simple opportunity for God to be glorified. May the church have a renewed sense to commit our plans to the Lord. May we seek His face for challenges we encounter; that He would grant to us solutions, creatively and provide the means to implement them. Pray God would empower the body of Christ, through the moving of the Holy Spirit to accomplish great exploits for the kingdom of God; in dimensions and depths yet experienced by the modern day church. We need God now, more than ever before. For we are not overwhelmed; But encouraged in all things. For God is with us; and for us... That we might walk in the Destiny He has ordained for us in advance. - PNC ![]() For whatever reason, I woke up this morning, in all honesty, trying to remember what was on my mind that I was going to write about this morning, before running out the door for church (which we are doing momentarily). As it my mind raced to remember, I thought about a couple of friends, who have been posting pictures on social media of late, regarding some of the theater productions they have been involved in. Of course, as we scrambled to get kids cleaned up (their desire to do so in the morning, like Dad does), I thought about the famous last words before entering on stage... PLACES EVERYONE!!! How important, in the efforts of the church to be effective and efficient. The resources are necessary, the finances critical, the game-plan essential... and when it's time to walk, everyone needs to be in the place they need to be. It's not enough to have the right people on the bus, as your organization begins to travel in a particular direction; but the next level of effectiveness is to have the right people in the right seat on the bus... to take full advantage of their capabilities and maximize everyone's contribution to the team. Thus, on this #effectiveSunday, pray for churches struggling... with resources, finances and people; not just the right people, but in the right places. As if waiting in the wings, may God help clarify vision and direction and opportunities for ministry. May He strengthen the weary and encourage the discouraged. Pray many would come along side to help carry the load; that the game-plan of ministry may be successful for the cause of Jesus Christ. Not as the world defines success, But that many would come to the saving grace Of the cross of Jesus Christ. For the glory of God our Father. - PNC ![]() Being effective and efficient comes at a cost. Life, truly can be and seem like a math problem. Decisions are weighed by opportunities, available resources, people's schedules and the balance of one's bank account. What's most effective may not be the most efficient. What's the most efficient usually gives up even more in effectiveness. Pursuing both often comes at a greater cost... one that could be hard to justify depending on the final factor... bank accounts balances. And just when you think you have it figured out... the brake shop installing the brake kit for your car calls and tells you the pads and rotors are the wrong size. Excellent! And of course, the shipper isn't open on the weekends, so now I'm stuck waiting until tomorrow to sort this out. So much for being efficient... that plan backfired. And effectiveness waits a few more days as well. These are difficult moments... frustrating enough as an individual. More-so as an organization. Sorting and navigating the process is taxing; requiring prayer, determination and strength from On High. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, for churches and leadership for the decisions and challenges they face. May today be a day of effectiveness for the cause of Jesus Christ. Pray God would help churches to make wise decisions as they steward their resources, of time, talent and treasure. May the moments of frustration, when circumstances don't appear to be working as well as they should or matters take a turn for re-evaluation; pray a grace and a covering as God gives direction and strength to move forward. Pray the church would not rely on their own strength, or that of it's people or position; but empowered by the strength of the Holy Spirit. Stewards for the cause of Christ Effective and efficient for the glory of God. - PNC I considered last night, just how often I've heard these words.
"Are you sure?" A situations or circumstance happens, sometimes minor in nature; other times... well, major. Time intensive to repair. Costly to fix. Frustrating to diagnose. You start trying to figure out what has gone wrong in hopes of being able to plan a solution. Then, in discussing the matter with one who knows more (remember, there is always someone in the room, smarter than yourself), there comes a point in the conversation where you are presented with the opportunity to admit the truth. Maybe, I'm wrong about this. Turns out I was. Even better, it went from what I thought was major to pretty minor. Big bark, but the bite was more like a nibble. How much more, in our attempts and plans to be effective and efficient as a church, the same transpires. In going through the process and having conversations, the question is asked. Hopefully it goes from being a major deal, to perhaps only needing to be tweaked, but that's not to say minor changes won't be enough and the organization could be in for some major work. Whatever it looks like, asking the question always results in taking a deeper, closer look that forces the mind to consider other options that present entirely different solutions. No, it's not always an enjoyable process when it happens, but watching it unfold as one reflects, is incredible. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, for pastors and leaders struggling to figure out the problems and challenges they face. Pray insight and wisdom, questions and revelation as conversations take place. Pray for the miraculous to occur, as solutions come together, whether they be quick and easy or expensive and laborious. Pray for strength and fortitude as they continue to seek the face of God and put their faith to action as the work to fulfill the calling and purpose God has placed upon them; to accomplish great exploits for the kingdom of God. Confidently moving forward By the grace of Christ By the power of the Holy Spirit For the glory of God. - PNC I'm pretty sure that yesterday, while I was watching Chase Holfelder on YouTube, that I came across some of his first videos that he ever posted. If you've never seen his work, you should check it out. He takes music that was written in a major key and reworks it into a minor key.
The results are incredible. Music that I don't normally care for, or music that I can appreciate the talent, but still isn't really quite my thing, I could listen to all day after Chase has worked his "magic". Now, with over 200,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, I considered the investment into his being both effective and efficient at his craft. You can certainly notice the quality of his work, on a number of levels, as he has continued his work, but to watch his first works... to simply start and project, and no matter what the results or how quickly they come... Stick-to-it-iveness. Hard to maintain, when discouragement comes in ministry, but the long and short of it is, eternity weighs in the balance. Faithful and diligent to the calling that God has placed upon us, will surely bring about eternal rewards. The effectiveness and efficient will come over time; but one must continue to invest the time. Pray, this #effectiveSunday for those discouraged; perhaps not seeing the results, growth and influence at the pace and rate they would like or prefer. May God strengthen them, even this hour. Pray for encouragement and support, to continue to press on towards the price of the high calling. May they not be derailed or detoured by failures and criticisms, but that God would use it all for His glory and His honor, and in His perfect timing. Patient. Focus. Determination Follow-through. For the advancement of the Gospel of Christ. - PNC This video came across the Twitter newsfeed of Bring Me 70 last night and what an incredible message. I've also admired Dr. Price' teaching and preaching; how He presents the Word and his interaction with His congregation. This classic sermon is truly powerful.
On this short, #effectiveSunday post, I would do well myself, to heed the words of Dr. Price. I should be in the Word of God more. You can not separate one from their word Abilities come and ago and require strength, time, resources and more when it comes to getting things done. So while our actions and deeds are memorable, our words are all the more. Communication is not hindered by physical ability, like some actions may be. We are known by our words; we know God by His Word. People can't know who we are, if we don't communicate with them who we are. Likewise, people can't know God, if He didn't communicate with us What makes Christianity difficult and thereby communicating the love of Christ, are those who have read the Bible and consider themselves knowing God well enough to remain wanting nothing to do with Him. They have entered a relationship with God on the premise of already having made up their mind that the relationship is flawed and failed; and it's not their doing, but that somehow God is not who He says He is. To add fuel to their fire, Christians continually drop the ball, in exemplifying and living this out in our own lives, by both our own words and deeds. This absolutely requires revelation from God to those who have yet to confess Christ as Lord. It certainly requires the church to call on God, that would we better display Christ as Lord. Pray this #effectiveSunday, that God would help His people. Not that we just be better people and better humans, but that we would be display the love of Jesus Christ. Pray that God would illuminate His Word to those who read and genuinely seek to understand who God is and how He operates. Pray a desire in the church, like I will do for myself, they people would have a greater want for God and His Word and the power of prayer in their lives. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but powers of this dark age. May the Holy Spirit empower and quicken the people of God Effective for the cause of Jesus Christ Efficient in reaching out to those in need of a move of God. For His Glory. - PNC ![]() I watched a sermon a few days ago; one that was actually the launch service of the new church planted by a former pastor. In fact, this is his third (although it feels like it's number 4 for some reason) church launch since we've been in a church he has pastored. The sermon, though, was on rest... particularly, the Israelite nation before crossing into the promised land, rested at Gilgal. It was an incredibly timed Word, as to what God accomplishes when we experience times of rest. In fact, it's amazing how much harder things are when one is not rested or does not experience times of rest. My body was playing catch-up this weekend. I've had a nasty kink in my neck for a few days that wouldn't go away. I had three or four nights in row where I didn't feel that I slept all that well, and certainly didn't get enough. One night, while debating if I was going to put a show on Netflix while in the living room or in bed, I fell asleep on the couch! Realized this moment at 2:50 in the morning. I'm praying nobody noticed it in that morning's prayer, as it was difficult to not close my eyes as I typed. So, you can imagine... by yesterday morning, I was in no rush to get out of bed. In the afternoon, when my monster headache suggested taking a nap, I didn't argue. The body knows, and if you don't get the hint, you won't have much choice in the matter. Needless to say, while the rest was good, I was neither effective nor efficient. However, if rest doesn't happen, one will rarely return to state of effective and efficient. We all need times of respite and retreat, so that we can go back out and engage and conquer. The enemy of our souls would like nothing more than to wear us down into oblivion. But God has plans to prosper; for a hope and a future. If we will but cast our cares upon Him and find rest in Him for our souls. Whether in the pew or behind the pulpit, may we each take that time. Starting NOW! Pray, this #effectiveSunday, for those in need of a great rest. For Pastors and church leaders, like what unfolded a week ago, may they not find themselves "leading on empty", nor moving forward on past successes. Pray a refreshing and a rejuvenation experience, as they come to God with their burdens and heavy hearts and lay them at the feet of Jesus. May their be deep rest; whereby God would accomplish the miraculous, as they remember some things, as perhaps God has to take away a few things, as God may need to restore some things. For whatever needs to transpire, may they return energized and empowered, ready to do the work God has called them to, as they set out to accomplish great exploits for the kingdom of God. Refreshed Revitalized Renewed... By the strength of His hand For the glory of God. - PNC ![]() Is it not utterly amazing how life unfolds; tragedy happens, then life continues and the distractions and struggles of life seemingly overshadow the tragedy. We don't live there (or at least we shouldn't), but major events have a way of changing who we are or at least our approach and perspective to such things. So on this #effectiveSunday, that happens to double as the 15th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11, a few thoughts on approaching life and the struggles along the way. Whatever it is you do, it's hard to do fully, let alone well when tired. It's further difficult, to get much done when the frustration is such that it's challenging to think creativity in order to find a method that works; different from what you've been trying that has you banging your head. against a wall... literally or figuratively. The enemy of our souls would like nothing more. Distract, detour and derail to the point that we are frustrated about our degree of lost, causing us to not think properly; possibly getting more lost and becoming more frustrated... we find ourselves in round-a-bout of understanding, that we entered not realizing that all the entry points into the circle would be immediately blocked or hindered upon our entry. It's a vicious cycle; one of which has given our spiritual enemy a great many laugh... much to the demise and restriction of life to many who have been bound by his stronghold in their lives. Yet, Scripture tells us Christ gives rest to the weary. And that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Strengthened and re-energized by God. I know... it's can be hard to get a good nights sleep. But Dad's advice is warranted. Get some rest. I know... it's difficult to retain His joy in our frustration. But God is also right. The cares of this life are fleeting and whatever you face; this too will pass. It may be a minor inconvenience. It may be a life-altering, perspective-changing event. God is with you always... even to the ends of the earth. Join me, this solemn #effectiveSunday... as we remember and reflect on where we were 15 years ago, that no matter what comes against us; may we continue to keep our eyes focused on God. Pray for those who are weary, in need of rest and energy... may God watch over them and minister healing virtue to their body, soul and mind. May their be strengthening of the spirit; that people would indeed, experience and maintain the joy of the Lord. Pray strongholds be broken and people would be set free from that which has snared and entangled them. May that which was meant to detour, derail and destroy be used for the glory of God. Victory in the end; Despite tragedies along the way. The Great Rescuer for all in need of saving. We call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. - PNC ![]() A friend of mine posted a meme on social medial late yesterday afternoon, and upon reading it, I thought, what a great word for today's prayer. While it applies to pastors and would be just as fitting for a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday post, I think you'll agree, it fits well, this #effectiveSunday morning. Consider this, from the great A.W. Tozer... "Listen to no man who has not listened to God." Isn't it amazing how quickly we can get wrapped up into perspective and opinions and ultimately, make a shift in our mindset where we view the world and our responses in ways that are less than Biblical and have little to do with or acknowledge our roots of faith in Christ. I was reminded of a story that Jim Cymbala, Pastor at Brooklyn Tabernacle shared a few years ago. He tells the story of tel-evangelist back in the day, who made statements in his sermons, that quiet frankly got the attention and concern of more than a few people, but in particular Cymbala and his wife. As God dealt with them to speak up, he finally spoke to a friend who was friends with the evangelist. It was a nervous phone call, for Cymbala's friendship had no where near the time and history to be able to navigate this conversation, but he stopped out in obedience anyway. It turns out the friend of the evangelist also knew the evangelist was stepping into dangerous waters. When confronted, that the evangelist should close the ministry or God would, the words fell on deaf ears. "Are you crazy? This thing is bringing a million dollars a day! What are you talking about, shut it down?" was the reply. Needless to say, within months, it was over. All because one stopped listening to God; having mentally shifted so far as the warning from a close friend who was listening (and had received confirmation in the person of Cymbala) was not enough to take heed and change course. Likewise for our present time... the church will fail to be of any use, much less effective and efficiency when any position of church leadership becomes greater than the ministry and the material successes start to outweigh and dominate the spiritual successes. When the message is changed to keep the money coming; when things change for continued growth in numbers rather than growth in spiritual maturity, there should and must be cause for concern. If not, then danger is looming... usually not all that far from us, either. Thanks for joining me, this #effectiveSunday, as we pray for the effective and efficient work of ministry, for the advancement of the gospel of Jesus Christ. May those in leadership and positions of influence within the church, great or small, have hearts and minds continually tuned to the voice and word of God. Pray for a strengthening of their resolve to seek His face and a desire to listen. Pray for wise counsel and advice, tempered with confirmation from others strong in the faith and full of the Holy Spirit. Pray for a move of the Holy Spirit as well; that God would accomplish the miraculous in our midst; always remembering God uses those who are humble and willing more than those proud and stubborn. May God build His Church By those willing to be a part... For He is the Head of the Church We, the body of Christ. For His glory and the advancement of the Gospel. - PNC I love this band. Every song sounds incredible. And back before the time you could be individual songs, I very much appreciated being able to by an album that I fully enjoyed, rather than spend $12-15 for only a couple of songs worth experiencing.
That said, the words to this struck me as we were headed back to pick up the kids last night. A huge part of being effective and efficient is wrapped up and defined in a game plan. A strategy. Is everything that the church does, consistent with the vision and the mission of the church? Essentially, it boils down to these two points. 1) Does it bring glory to God? 2) Does it seek to reach the unsaved? Sure, it can accomplish other things and perhaps even be worth doing, but ultimately, if it doesn't contribute to those central points of focus, then it's hard to say it was both fully effective and efficient. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, that indeed, everything that we say and do would glorify God. May the activities and events of the church, seek to reach the lost and the dying in their community. May the truth of God and His Word be revealed as the church engages community, daily. Pray a consistency about our lives, as we continue to live out a real faith, battling real struggles all while serving a real God. As we commit our ways to the Lord and seek His face, may He use us and raise us up to bring glory to Him as He works all things together in our lives for His purpose. Strategy to win the lost. To serve the Lord. For His glory and the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC I'm not exactly sure what prompted me to think about this last night, as I spend the afternoon at a family reunion and honestly had given much thought at all to today's prayer (I know that sounds weird, especially having written yesterday's prayer on inquiries), but, whatever the reason, another song played an influence.
If you ever get a chance to see the band, Everfound, in concert, you should absolutely go! Comprised of four brothers from Russia, these young men have an incredible testimony of faith and the persecution their family faced before coming to America, in 1996, if I recall correctly. Their debut album is in the CD player of the vehicle we took to the reunion, this album being one of the favorites of my oldest daughter. The entire album contains powerful lyrics, but as we were making our way to leave, the song Unless started playing, in light of the concepts of effective and efficiency. There's an old adage that says, "pray like everything depends on God; work like everything depends on you." Pair that ideology with the chorus of the song... "unless a miracle, takes control; and rescues my fallen world." We struggle to work and play and to make our way sometimes forgetting or at least letting it move to the backside of our memory, that everything we do is because of the ability granted to us by God, to be used for purposes of God, in order to bring glory to God. Thus, no matter our best efforts, they are, in fact, as Solomon explained, meaningless in our fallen world... unless, a Miracle. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, for the miraculous, in our midst. In our fallen world, where everything under the sun is meaningless and all our best efforts will fall short of the glory of God, may the sovereignty of God grace our lives. May our words and deeds for the cause of Jesus Christ bring glory to God and that the drawing of the Holy Spirit would go before us and prepare the way for the work of the Lord. May we be a people, that indeed, would trust God, for it does all depend on Him, while working like it does depend on us, for we are not called to do and be nothing; but we are called to be salt and light. God, go before us this hour. Do what only You can do; That we might do what you have called for us to do. For the glory of God. For the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC ![]() Effective and efficient is a delicate and difficult balance... for nearly everything one sets out to accomplish. Effective implies a level of thoroughness. A knowing of what to do, when to do, how to do and with whom, that leads one to believe a well-organized game plan was well-executed. Efficient, on the other hand, implies a level of quickness. A keeping up a good pace, for an extended period of time, so that the well-executed, well-organized plan is completed in good time. However, effectiveness, depending on the task, can take a long time. Likewise, efficiency comes in degrees, as not everything is meant to go at the quickest pace possible. I thought about this yesterday afternoon, as my wife and I returned from an overnight get-away. Not everything can be rushed. Not everything can be done quickly. Faith in God; one's spiritual journey... is an investment. A lifetime investment. Marriage; sharing life with you spouse... is an investment. A lifetime investment. Parenting; raising children ready to take on the world... is an investment. A lifetime investment. The most effective of these... require organization and follow-through. The most efficient of these... require a commitment to invest for life. And in a day and age, when these characteristics are applauded when achieved, yet not valued enough to be universal, we find ourselves in a dangerous place. Decades of marriage... awesome. But we can't do that. Those days don't exist anymore. Great parents and healthy kids... that's great. But you don't know our family; my kids. A life of faith? That's good for you; but that's not for me. Yet the stability, the experience, and the confidence of a life lived well, because they were committed to God and to family can not be ignored. It doesn't mean these three areas of life don't have difficulty, struggle and frustration. They do. But effective and efficient in faith and family require a commitment to a lifetime investment. Pray, this #effectiveSunday, that a lifetime commitment, a lifetime investment would not be avoided or deflected, but encouraged. May people experience the power and presence of God in their life, for the remainder of their days. Pray for strength and clarity of purpose as they live out a genuine faith in God. Pray for Godly homes, Godly marriages, Godly parents and Godly children; may their be a re-commitment to life for God and to remain committed to our spouse and our children; that we would live real lives of real faith not afraid to let our light shine before men; that they may know our Father God in Heaven. May our lives bring glory and honor to Him because we've remained faithful to Him and to those He has blessed us to share life together. Investments with eternal returns. For the glory of God. For the advancement of the cause of Jesus Christ. - PNC It occurred to me late last night, that's it's hard to be effective if you aren't already moving...
One can't be diligent at doing nothing. Technically, they can, but there are many names for that and it's usually not something for which people praise and applaud your efforts. Being effective means being in motion. Then, I awake this morning as I'm getting ready to write, I read writer Jeff Groins latest blog post. On being stuck in life and decision-making, he writes; "What will matter is that you acted, that you made a contribution, and that you decided to do something. Or that you didn't." He goes on to share what his friend calls the bicycle principle. "It's easier to make changes in life once you are moving... isn't it interesting that failure usually happens not when we move too quickly, but too slowly?" So, a simple message, on simple diligence. If I may use my own experience... consider Bring Me 70? God's helping daily to bring fresh content and a fresh perspective and I'm bringing to the table, that now with some 400+ daily prayers, there's no turning around. I have to keep going and be diligent in continuing the work. So, pray with me, this #effectiveSunday for churches that are stuck. May they begin to pray anew and seek the face of God in greater ways. Pray they begin to start to move in directions that honor God, yet may provide greater insight into where they are to go and when they are to move. Pray for creativity; focus and energy as the Holy Spirit leads and directs. Pray a fresh element of stepping out in faith and that as they do, God would work the miraculous in the midst. May we be found faithful; In that whatever we do, We do as unto the Lord. For His glory and honor. - PNC |
